2020 has been one of the most challenging and turbulent years for us all. Every aspect of our lives both professionally and personally has altered in some way.
The pandemic continues to take its toll on the workplace, regardless of whether you are remote working or office based.
Stress and anxiety levels have risen at an alarming rate as we deal with the ongoing uncertainty that the pandemic brings. However, there are things that we can do within our businesses to alleviate the stress felt by employees, especially during the festive period.
Be Flexible
Employers are typically more flexible at this time of year as family obligations increase amongst their employees. Although Christmas is going to be different this year, it does not mean that flexibility is unwarranted. Some families are likely to be creative with how they communicate with loved ones, organising virtual celebrations, drinks and get togethers. Connectivity with family and friends has never been more important and as business owners and leaders, we must ensure that the same level of flexibility is provided as per previous years.
Provide Incentives
The last quarter of the year is often a time where employees are pushed to their limits trying to match or exceed personal targets, working longer hours and having increased workload. Although the pandemic has hit business and revenue lines hard, it may be useful to provide an incentive, monetary or otherwise to help encourage and reward employees for their efforts. It may be that we need to think a little more outside the box to achieve this, but employees will feel much more valued and appreciated.
Give a gift of thanks
Just think of how much money you are saving from lack of those lavish Christmas parties and gatherings this year. The bill spent on booze alone can often be enough to bring an employer and business owner to tears. As much as we will all miss the annual staff Christmas events this year, it may be that we can put this money to better use. Take some of that money and put it towards a gift to a client or employee. Perhaps donate it to a local cause that has helped your community during these difficult times.
If you never had a budget for workplace parties to begin with, or you could really do with the money for other means, consider giving your employees an extra day or two off over the Christmas period. Perhaps package a ‘Day Off IOU’ in a holiday card that employees can redeem at any point in the year.
Remind employees about their benefits
Many organizations conduct their annual reviews at this time of year. It could be a perfect time to remind employees about their overall benefits package including employee assistance programs and/or mental health benefits. There may be new initiatives in place that employees can participate in at the office or at home too. Make everyone aware that the support and guidance, should they need it, is readily available.
Thank employees for their hard work and clients for their partnership.
Whilst gifting is great, now is the perfect opportunity to connect with individuals, employees, and clients alike. Let employees know that they are appreciated. We are all feeling the video call fatigue and so a nice letter, card, or personal call from the boss will really mean a lot to employees. And do not forget to thank customers for their patience and patronage.
There will be much to look forward to in 2021, especially if we manage to have our summer holidays! However, we are not done with this pandemic just yet. The impact that the pandemic has had on businesses will be felt for months and maybe years to come and we must continue to recognise the teamwork, determination and flexibility needed to keep going during these uncertain times.
Use this time over the next couple of weeks to unwind if possible, and to reflect on how you, your team and your business have got through this pandemic, the way in which everyone has adapted to rapid change and the challenges we have faced.
We would like to wish all our customers and followers a very happy and relaxing Christmas. Fingers crossed for a positive 2021. If you need any support or guidance in preparation for a new year ahead, please contact us today on 01625 428926 or enquiries@sitrusconsulting.com
